I drove under the canopy of trees feeling as if I were entering the birthplace of absolute contentment. I couldn’t believe that less than only two hours had passed since I’d left behind that chaotic city of concrete and glass; skyscrapers; grating noises, and seven million people hurrying to get nowhere. That I could escape all that, and arrive so quickly at the tranquil place I was now, seemed impossible. This nirvana, this indisputable last step before heaven, it was truly unbelievable.

Granted, it was late morning, but the light inside the tunnel of thick, motionless, green leaves and draping wispy moss somehow was still dim and soft. Alone and rolling forward ever so slowly with the windows down, I felt like I was experiencing one of those first magical moments of a new spring dawn. Oh, there were bands of near-noon light crossing the shaded road, brightening the trees in splotches, but they were few and well-spaced. The whole scene was simply surreal. The different shades of green surrounding me, the surreal light, the utter peacefulness of being alone there, it all made me feel like I’d found that fabled destination they call nirvana.

But I was in for yet another surprise. In my wildest, most rampant dreams I never could have imagined what was waiting at the end of that long green tunnel.

Beautiful Tom! But I’d expect no less from you – the writer of Four Days With Hemingway’s Ghost (great title on that book, by the way!). http://www.amazon.com/Four-Days-Hemingways-Ghost-Winton-ebook/dp/B008FBXENQ

Awww…thanks Cheryl. I wrestle with all of my words and see now that I could have eliminated one or two. Then again, this is a first draft.

      Tom,
What a lovely scene you’ve set. You do have such a gift for painting with words.

Thanks so much, Barbara. We certainly work hard at what we do, don’t we?
